Thursday, December 30, 1999

STORRS, CT -- The University of Findlay's Darryl Somerville recorded a hat trick to lead the Oilers to a 5-3 victory and a third-place finish at the 1999 SNET UConn Hockey Classic at the Connecticut Ice Arena Thursday afternoon.

Findlay's record improves to 7-9-0 overall, while Holy Cross drops to an overall record of 3-11-1.

Somerville opened the scoring with two goals in a three-minute time span. Andy Croak and Kevin Pendersen tallied the assists on the first goal, and Croak and James Rademaker assisted on the second.

But Holy Cross answered with two straight goals of its own. Pat Rismiller found the back of the net on a power-play opportunity, with assists by Brandon Doria and Paul Cavanagh, and Chris Fattey connected two minutes later on an unassisted tally.

Shaun Endres gave the Oilers a 3-2 lead at the end of the first period, assisted by Darcy Parsons and Ben Patey.

At 5:25 of the second, Somerville netted his third goal on a power play with assists by Rademaker and Troy Martin. At the 7:02 mark, Findlay was charged with a penalty, but Jason Maxwell promptly tallied shorthanded 20 seconds later, with an assist from Endres, to widen the Findlay lead to 5-2.

Holy Cross' Brian Akashian scored the only goal of the final stanza.

Findlay's Jamie VandeSpyker recorded 23 saves in net, while Dan Bennett tallied 18 for the Pioneers. Holy Cross outshot Findlay 26-24 in the losing effort.
