Nathan Mayfield added a goal and two assists and Paul Gonzalez scored a shorthanded goal for the Cadets, who won their second straight game and improved to 2-5-1 on the season. Manhattanville, in its first season of varsity hockey, fell to 1-2-0 after squaring off against its first Division I opponent.
The Valiants opened with a rough style of play, costing Army two key players before a goal was even scored. Center Mike Fairman, who entered the contest tied for fifth in the nation with eight goals through seven games, left with an ankle injury six minutes in, but a much scarier moment occurred with 10:41 left in the opening period when winger Jon Toftey was checked from behind headfirst into the sideboards by T.J. Cline and had to be carried off the ice on a stretcher.
Toftey, who sat out all of the 1998-99 season with a back injury, suffered a sprained neck but was back in the building walking under his own power by game's end.
Cline was slapped with a five-minute major penalty and a game disqualification. The Cadets did not score on the five-minute power play, but just over a minute after resuming at even strength, Mayfield knocked in a rebound to make it 1-0.
The Valiants were whistled for 14 penalties in the game, and the infractions finally caught up to them as Army scored three straight power-play goals to grab a commanding 4-0 lead. Carpenter's first goal game with 36 seconds left in the first period when Mayfield's shot from the point was redirected to him by Joe Dudek, and Carpenter fired into a virtually open net.
Tim Fisher and Carpenter scored with a man advantage in the second period. Gonzalez scored a nifty shorthanded goal at 7:07 of the third when he knocked down goalie Jeremy Hill's clearing attempt and flipped the puck past him. It was Army's first shorthanded tally of the season. Dave Keiser also pocketed his first goal of the season, one-timing a John Williams pass with 47 seconds remaining in the third.
Manhattanville's lone goal came on the power play at 19:39 of the second period, when Stephen Douglas feathered a nifty pass from the point to Tommy Prate on the right doorstep.
Scott Hamilton was strong in goal for the Cadets, stopping 19 of 20 shots, including 14 in the final period to improve to 2-1-1 on the season. Hill made 32 saves for the Valiants before giving way to James Dale with 10:55 to play.
Army outshot Manhattanville 41-20. The Cadets were 3-of-7 on the power play, while the Valiants were 1-of-4.
After scoring only six goals in its first six games of the season, Army has now scored six in each of its last two games, victories over Bentley and Manhattanville.
