Fairfield Ties Army In Opener At Q Cup; Cadets Advance To Final On Shootout Win

Friday, October 22, 1999

Northford, Conn. -- It was only a matter of time before the penalties caught up to the Fairfield (0-0-1) hockey team, and Army (0-2-1) took advantage as the Cadets rallied from a 2-0 deficit as the teams skated to a 2-2 draw in the Quinnipiac Cup at the Northford Ice Pavilion Friday night.

With the Stags leading 2-0 three minutes into the third, Cadet forward Mike Fairman cashed in on a two-man advantage after a five-minute major was called against Fairfield during a power play. Paul Gonzalez scored another power-play goal off a rebound 37 seconds later to tie the contest 2-2.

The squads played a five-minute scoreless overtime period and went to a shootout to determine which team would advance to the finals of the tournament. Jon Toftey and John Williams netted goals for the Cadets, while Casey Laflamme scored the Stags' lone tally, giving Army the 2-1 shootout victory.

Under NCAA rules, which do not allow for shootouts in official finishes, the game still goes under the tie column for both schools.

Fairfield logged 12 penalties and gave Army three two-man advantages. The Cadets finished 2-for-11 on the power play, while Fairfield went 1-for-4.

Brendan Foley gave Fairfield a 1-0 advantage in the first when he blasted a rebound past Army netminder Scott Hamilton. Tim Desmarais fed Rory Eads for a tally in the second, giving Fairfield the 2-0 cushion.

Derek Saunders made 26 saves in the contest, while Hamilton stopped 24 shots.

The tie is the first in the 11-game all-time series between the Stags and Cadets. It's also Fairfield's first draw in 79 games, dating back to the 1996-97 campaign. Fairfield tied Western New England, Nov. 16, 1996.

The Red and White meets Quinnipiac in the consolation round Saturday at 4 p.m. in the Northford Ice Pavilion. The Braves tied MAAC opponent Iona 7-7 and lost a shootout, which allowed the Gaels to advance to the championship.
