Fisher, Gonzalez Lead Comeback In Wild Army Win

Saturday, February 26, 2000

WEST POINT, N.Y. -- Tim Fisher scored his first career hat trick and Paul Gonzalez had four assists as Army dug out of an early 4-1 hole and rallied for a wild 10-6 victory over Findlay at Tate Rink on Saturday night.

The emotional game featured six goals in the first 7:14, 110 penalty minutes and the most total goals in a game in Tate Rink in more than three years. The win was the Cadets' first in College Hockey America play this season and kept them alive for a CHA tournament berth. Army must sweep a two-game series from Air Force at Tate Rink next weekend to secure the final playoff spot.

Just six minutes into this game, though, Army's playoff hopes appeared grim as the Oilers scored four times in the first 5:52 to grab a 4-1 lead. Findlay's Shaun Endres tallied on the first shift of the game just 44 seconds in, but Fisher answered at 3:56 to make it 1-1.

Brant Somerville scored just 23 seconds later, though, starting a Findlay three-goal run as Nick Wyzgowski, who did not have a goal in 26 games this season, scored twice in a 58-second span to make it 4-1.

His first goal knocked out Army starting goalie Scott Hamilton, and his second welcomed reliever Corey Winer.

Army's Bill Griffith scored the game's sixth goal at the 7:14 mark to cut it to 4-2, and Griffith then stuffed the puck past Findlay goalie Jamie VandeSpyker with 1:08 left in the opening period to make it a game again at 4-3.

VandeSpyker, who was brilliant in a 45-save performance in Findlay's 4-2 win on Friday night, wouldn't be around much longer, though. Like Hamilton, VandeSpyker got the hook after yielding the tying and go-ahead goals in the first 5:55 of the second period.

Fisher jumped on a loose puck in front of the net and flipped it over VandeSpyker's shoulder to make it 4-4 at the 2:39 mark of the second, and just over three minutes later Joe Carpenter put Army ahead for the first time with a goal from the left slot.

The game was hardly over, however. Less than three minutes after Carpenter's goal Army turned the puck over in its own zone and Troy Martin finished off a two-on-one with Jason Maxwell to knot the contest once again at 5-5.

But with just 1:32 left in the period Army defenseman Josh Morino pulled a Findlay clearing attempt off the boards and beat Oiler reliever Jim Brunner from the left point.

Army was welcomed back to the ice for the third period with a five-on-three power play, and the Cadets needed only 16 seconds to cash in. Defenseman John Williams scored from the top of the left circle with a low shot past Brunner's right skate. But again Findlay made things interesting when Wyzgowski scored his third goal at 6:37 to make it 7-6.

The Cadets finally opened up some breathing room with two quick goals in a span of eight seconds late in the period. On a four-on-three power play, Morino scored on another long shot at 15:03, and at 15:11 Fisher completed his hat trick with a goal from the right slot.

Goal number 10 for the Cadets was a shorthanded, empty-net tally from Garrett Brougham with exactly two minutes to go.

For the second straight night these two teams engaged in a penalty-filled battle. This one was marred by an ugly incident late in the second period. Army's Nathan Mayfield was whistled for a five-minute major penalty for hitting Brant Somerville from behind into the boards.

While Somerville was down on the ice injured and as Mayfield was being escorted to the dressing room for his game misconduct, Somerville's twin brother, forward Darryl Somerville, attacked Mayfield and peppered him with a barrage of punches. The fighting major and resulting game disqualification canceled what would have been a five-minute power-play for the Oilers. Instead, Findlay took two more minor penalties in the final 43 seconds of the period, allowing Army to score its important five-on-three goal in the opening moments of the third.

There were 110 penalty minutes in the game and 214 in the two-game series. Findlay had 16 for 67 minutes on Saturday and Army 12 for 43. The Cadets were 2-for-8 on the power play while killing all six Findlay man-up chances.

Fisher added an assist to go with his hat trick for a four-point night, and Gonzalez tied a career high with his four assists. Morino (two goals, one assist), Carpenter (1-2) and Brougham (1-2) had three-point nights for the Cadets. Freshman Kevin Emore, playing in only his second game of the season, picked up his first collegiate point with an assist on Army's first goal.

Findlay had three players score four points -- Wyzgowski (3-1), Brant Somerville (1-3) and Endres (1-3).

The Oilers outshot Army 35-33, but Winer made 25 saves in relief for his eighth win of the season. Hamilton made four stops before departing. VandeSpyker made 12 saves and Brunner 11 for Findlay.

Army snapped a four-game losing streak with the victory and improved to 13-16-2 overall, 1-7-0 in the CHA. Findlay is 9-21-0, 4-14-0.
