Bjork Leads Beavers Over Warriors, 6-4

BEMIDJI, MN -- Daniel Rafner tallied a hat trick for Wayne State, but Stefan Bjork paced Bemidji State with two goals, including a school record breaking power play goal, as the Beavers outlasted the Warriors 6-4 to earn a sweep at the John Glas Fieldhouse.

Bjork, who added an empty net goal in the third period to seal the win, scored his eighth power-play goal of the season at 10:41 of the second period, snapping Drey Bradley's single season record of seven power play goals by a defenseman set back in 1983-84.

Bjork's goal gave BSU a 4-0 lead, following first period Beaver goals by Daryl Bat and senior Dan Pelletier, and a second period goal from Mike Perpich.

Rafner scored the first of his three goals for Wayne State at 13:15 of the second period with an assist from Maxim Starchenko.

Beaver seniors Calvin Chartrand and Jay Hanson teamed up for the fifth BSU goal at 19:32 of the second period as Chartrand scored the 44th goal of his career with an assist from Hanson. Bat also earned an assist on the play, giving BSU a 5-1 lead.

The Warriors rattled off a three unanswered goals in the third period with two goals from Rafner and another from Dustin Kingston, closing the gap to 5-4 at the 16:53 mark of the third.

Wayne State goaltender Marc Carlson skated to the bench at 18:28 of the third period to give the Warriors an extra attacker, but Pelletier slid the puck to Bjork for an empty net goal at 19:55 to seal the win.

Bob Tallarico tallied 24 saves for BSU, and Carlson totaled 22 for WSU.

The Beavers (12-15-1, 8-7-1 CHA) travel to Colorado next weekend for a four-point CHA game at Air Force Feb. 26, followed by a match-up at Denver Feb. 27. Wayne State (10-15-2) hosts Alabama-Huntsville Feb. 25-26.
