Providence (11-9-1), which entered the game with 12 straight victories over the Cadets dating back to the 1968-69 season, scored three times in a span of 4:53 in the second period to break open a 1-1 game, but could not hold the 4-1 lead.
Defenseman John Williams ignited Army's rally with a power-play goal from the right point at 13:10 of the second period. K.C. Finnegan made it a 4-2 game 4:23 into the third, and at 11:47 Keiser took a nice feed from Bill Griffith between the circles and snuck it past Friar goalie Nolan Schaefer (20 saves).
Army goalie Corey Winer shook off the shaky five-minute stretch in the second period and was brilliant over the final 25 minutes. He stopped all 18 shots he faced in the third period and overtime and finished with 37 saves for the game. Providence outshot Army 41-24.
The Cadets (8-10-2) had two glorious opportunities to score in the waning moments of overtime. Schaefer stopped Paul Gonzalez's high shot from the left slot in the final 20 seconds, and Tim Fisher's diving attempt was smothered with under two seconds to play. Army's Joe Dudek also shot wide from just in front of an open net in the first period.
Peter Fregoe, Doug Sheppard and Nick Lent all scored in the middle period for the Friars as the visitors appeared to have taken a commanding lead.
Each team scored a goal in the opening period, with Fernando Pisani getting Providence on the board with a high shot from the right faceoff dot at the 12:17 mark. Just 5:10 later, Mike Fairman scored his team-leading 12th goal of the season on a five-on-three advantage, snapping Army's 0-for-15 skein on the power play.
The Friars were whistled for five minor penalties in the opening period and nine in the game. The Cadets converted on two of eight power-play opportunities, while Providence was one of three.
Fairman and Williams each had a goal and an assist for the Cadets, while Pisani had a similar two-point night for Providence.
Army has now faced two opponents from Hockey East this season and battled to overtime in both contests. On Oct. 29, Winer made 54 saves but lost a heartbreaking 1-0 overtime decision to Massachusetts.
The Cadets bounce right back into action on Saturday night against another tough opponent in 12th-ranked Colgate. Faceoff is 7 p.m. in Tate Rink. Providence hosts crosstown rival Brown on Tuesday.
